Being a huge fan of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, I chose to turn my passion for it towards art. While I draw a lot of fanart, I enjoy character design and making artworks of my own original characters as well.

Cicilia the Sea Slug & Her Design

Cicilia the Sea Slug was designed to be many things: a mascot, a Sonic character, and a love letter to the art of character design. She is not only a design, but a passion project, and she was made with important character design principles in mind, thorough research, and genuine love.The initial concept was simple: sea slugs are my favorite animal, so if I was going to design a character to represent me, she would be a sea slug. I settled on the rainbow sea slug because its visuals stood out to me, and it matched the feminine-aligned character I had in mind.

The character design in Sonic the Hedgehog seems to be commonly based around parallels or general contrast between characters, so I wanted to do the same for Cicilia. If Sonic was the sun, Knuckles was the moon; if Sonic represented light, Shadow represented darkness, and just as Sonic represented the bright side of freedom, Rouge represented the darker side of freedom. In knowing that, Cicilia was designed to represent freedom as well, but in her own way. That freedom was the freedom to love. Love is a complex thing, and as is freedom.Yet another contrast between her and Sonic was their element-- if Sonic was the wind, Cicilia was the water. She was designed to be a bouncy, free-spirited character that can adapt quickly and as necessary to match her needs.

Her core design principles are the heart motifs scattered throughout her design, and the strict usage of curved & wavy lines that compose her. Cicilia conveys the freedom to love with her heart motifs, and she conveys the element of water with her curved edges & lines. If she is without her hearts or her curves, that is no longer Cicilia, but an imitation of her, as by removing her core, you change her. She must never be drawn without hearts incorporated into her design, and it is imperative that straight and jagged edges are kept to a minimum when drawing her.Cicilia's biology is meant to mimic that of real sea slugs as well. I, myself, am nonbinary, and sea slugs are hermaphrodites, so those facts are reflected on Cicilia being intersex. Although she shares my general body type, she is without a sex that fits the binary, and is comfortable in her skin regardless. Cicilia may often use feminine pronouns, but she is not threatened by masculinity, and is comfortable with whatever one chooses to refer to her by. This is yet another example of her demonstrating the fluidity of water.

Returning to the subject of Cicilia's biology, she is designed to mimic that of a sea slug, but not entirely. She has no skeleton, but in order to translate her to a humanoid design, her body is filled with a purple-yellow fluid that keeps her body stiff and upright.When it comes to the battlefield, Cicilia is super-powered with distinguished prowess as a martial artist. She not only fights with kicks and punches, but her limbs can stretch like elastic as well, and she has such fine control over them that she uses her hair-like tendrils to form fists to assist her in battle. In regards to her speed, she may be much faster than the average individual, but she is no match for characters like Tails, Knuckles, and Sonic. Because of this, her preferred mode of transportation is extreme gear.^{[ Designer's Note: Cicilia specifically has five tendrils on the back of her head in order to create the aforementioned fist/hand with her hair. Their length depends on her outfit and needs due to the fact that she can grow and shrink them as she wishes. ]}Although Cicilia still feels pain and can die, she can be decapitated yet still live on to regrow herself, much like a real sea slug. If you want to defeat her, it must be in an unorthodox way that prevents her from regrowing, such as melting or disintegration. Do note that, although you must use unusual means to defeat her, Cicilia is not meant to be over-powered, and can still be knocked down in battle like any other hero would.

Cicilia's personality was meant to be an amalgamation of Rouge's and Sonic's. She's cocky, yet kind, she can be impulsive, yet still calculated and intuitive, and she has a flare for the dramatics. She has the shell of an extrovert, but the inner-makings of an introvert. Although she can be loud and excitable, the walls surrounding her true feelings are well-fortified. When things get tough, Cicilia doubles down, determined to be strong for herself and those around her so that she may adapt, inspire, and push forward in spite of any hardships she may face.

On the 18th of February, 2025, Shadow the Hedgehog woke up in a void he decided to call 'The Grey Matter' with no recollection of how he got there, and any attempt to sort through his memories was futile. All he had on his person were his inhibitor rings, a pistol, his shoes, his gloves, and... a phone?Project Everchrome can be read here.
